Fastly’s world-class Dynamic Site Acceleration (DSA) speeds up requests and responses between cache nodes in our POPs and your origin server, so your web and mobile content is served faster. We keep connections between cache nodes and your origin open (or “hot”) so traffic can flow without incurring latency penalties for constantly setting up new connections. Our advanced algorithms route traffic along the optimal path between our POPs and your origin.
Our powerful Origin Shield feature reduces load on your origin and optimizes TCP and network overhead between our caches and your origin. By designating a specific POP to serve as a “shield” for your origin servers, you can have all cache miss requests collapsed down to a single request to your origin server. Once the Origin Shield has a copy of the content, it serves any additional requests. This can result in tremendous cost savings for your origin infrastructure.
Origin Shield also protects your origin server when you need to clear cache. It prevents server overload by sending only one request back to your origin instead of multiple.
Request Collapsing speeds up content delivery by reducing the amount of requests going to your origin server. When you refresh an object on your website, all requests for that object are collapsed into a single request which goes back to your origin server or Fastly’s Origin Shield. Requests are held in queue while we fetch new content, serve it, and store it in a designated POP.
Paired with Origin Shield, Request Collapsing allows you to collapse requests across your entire network, reducing origin load and infrastructure costs.
