A video CDN (content delivery network) refers to a CDN that is designed with video streaming capabilities. This CDN is comprised of a distributed network of servers built to store and deliver video content (both live streams and video-on-demand (VOD)) to viewers with low latency and minimal buffering. What is a CDN?

How is a video CDN different from a regular CDN?

A video CDN is purpose-built for the unique demands of video: much larger file sizes, sustained high-bitrate delivery, adaptive bitrate streaming, and - for live content - very tight latency requirements. How does a video CDN work?

A video CDN operates via the following steps: 

  1. A video is encoded and packaged into a streaming format (HLS or DASH), which breaks it into small segments at multiple quality levels.

  2. The origin (or origin storage) holds the master copy.

  3. When a viewer requests the video, the CDN routes them to a nearby edge server.

  4. If that edge server already has the requested segment cached, it serves it directly. If not, it fetches the segment from the origin, caches it, and delivers it. This enables subsequent requests in that region to be served from cache.

  5. The player on the viewer's device continuously requests the appropriate quality segment based on their current network conditions (adaptive bitrate streaming).

Why does video need a CDN?

Video files are large and often watched by many people at once, especially during live events. Without a CDN, every viewer would pull directly from the origin, which quickly becomes a bottleneck. This can result in increased latency, buffering, and origin infrastructure costs. 

A video CDN solves this by caching content close to viewers and absorbing traffic spikes, so origin load stays manageable and viewers get a consistent playback experience regardless of location or concurrent audience size.

What is the difference between live streaming and VOD delivery on a CDN?

  • VOD (video-on-demand): Content is pre-encoded and stored; the CDN caches segments once and reuses them for many subsequent viewers. Caching efficiency is generally high since content doesn't change.

  • Live streaming: Segments are generated in near real time as the event happens, so there's little time to pre-cache. Video CDNs handle this with techniques like origin shielding (collapsing many simultaneous requests for the same new segment into a single origin fetch) to prevent "thundering herd" load on the origin at the start of a live event.

What are common streaming protocols a video CDN needs to support?

The most widely used are HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) and MPEG-DASH, both of which deliver video as a sequence of small HTTP-based segments at multiple bitrates. Some setups also involve lower-latency protocols ( LL-HLS, WebRTC) for use cases where near-instant delivery matters, like interactive live events or betting/auction platforms.

What is adaptive bitrate streaming, and how does the CDN factor in?

Adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming encodes the same video at multiple quality/bitrate levels. The video player monitors the viewer's available bandwidth and switches between levels in real time to avoid buffering. The CDN's job is to make all of those bitrate variants available at the edge with low latency, so the player can switch smoothly without stalls.

What is origin shielding, and why does it matter for video?

Origin shielding designates a mid-tier caching layer (think of this as a "shield" point of presence) that sits between edge servers and the origin. When many edge locations request the same uncached segment at once - this is common at the start of a live stream -  the shield collapses those requests into a single origin fetch. It then distributes the result to all requesting edges. This protects the origin from being overwhelmed during traffic spikes.

  • Time to first frame: How quickly playback starts after a viewer hits play
