Die Zeit delivers millisecond news and dynamic edge paywall orchestration with Fastly
Key results
Achieved a >90% cache hit ratio, shortening news delivery times by 100x from seconds down to milliseconds.
Orchestrated dynamic paywalls at the network edge using Fastly Compute, delivering tailored open or gated content blocks based on subscriber entitlements.
Protected backend Content Management Systems (CMS) from traffic surges and aggressive crawler patterns through a reliable edge layer.
Enabled near-instant breaking news updates globally using Fastly’s Instant Purge.
Streamlined the developer experience by adopting Rust on Compute, simplifying testing for complex business logic while maintaining decade-long platform stability.
The challenge
Die Zeit is a leading German news publishing house with a historic weekly newspaper and a thriving digital platform that reaches millions of readers across Germany. As editorial teams produce rich, detailed, and analytical journalism, underlying Content Management Systems (CMS) and rendering stacks naturally experience performance drag.
More than 10 years ago, Die Zeit operated on a small hosting infrastructure that struggled during major traffic spikes. Adopting Varnish VCL helped absorb incoming traffic, but over a decade of expanding digital offerings caused VCL code to grow excessively complex, requiring intricate testing layers to maintain. Furthermore, handling sophisticated business logic—such as user subscriptions and paywall gating—at the origin or client-side created maintainability hurdles. Die Zeit needed a modern, developer-friendly edge platform capable of handling complex orchestration without compromising speed or reliability.
The solution
To streamline code architecture while maximizing delivery speed, Die Zeit migrated its core edge logic to Fastly CDN and Compute, choosing Rust as its primary edge development language.
Orchestrate dynamic paywalls at the edge: Rather than relying solely on client-side JavaScript or heavy origin checks to lock content, Die Zeit leverages Fastly Compute to evaluate subscriber entitlements directly at the edge. Compute executes checks to determine whether an article is free or paid, verifies subscriber status, and dynamically serves either the full article text or a subscription gate. This edge logic allows Die Zeit to easily roll out new offerings, such as podcast-only subscriptions, without modifying core CMS logic.
Accelerate news delivery with Instant Purge: Fastly caches article pages at edge Points of Presence (POPs) close to readers, reducing delivery times from seconds at the CMS to milliseconds at the edge. When editors publish breaking news updates, Fastly’s Instant Purge invalidates and refreshes cached content globally within milliseconds.
Shield origin infrastructure with >90% cache hits: Maintaining a cache hit ratio above 90% allows Fastly to act as a resilient protective shield. Incoming traffic bursts and automated web crawlers are absorbed at the edge before hitting backend servers.
Seamless Google Cloud peering: Die Zeit takes advantage of Fastly’s direct network peering with Google Cloud, eliminating technical latency between Fastly POPs and their Google Cloud backend.
Looking forward: Personalized content
As Die Zeit evolves its digital ecosystem, the engineering team plans to leverage Fastly Compute to dynamically organize and personalize article layouts at the edge for individual subscribers. By offloading complex orchestration to Fastly's edge runtime, Die Zeit ensures its technical stack remains as fast, modern, and reliable as its journalism.
